Hurston and Wright

I found both of these essays to be very interesting, because of how they both show the positive and negative sides of being black. What I really found to be interesting was how Wright talked about the violent acts near the beginning of his essay. He did say that he didnt want to fight and he ended up doing that. It reminded me of the peaceful protests the black people did to eliminate segregation laws and to be equal to whites.

I thought that Wright's essay showed more of a negative side of being black. It detailed several scenes where blacks were beaten/mistreated by whites and I don't see that as being positive. It's true that the boy knew how to act and seemed to be a very obedient black trying to make something of himself. And Hurston's essay wasn't really negative or positive. It was jsut a young black girl saying that she was proud of who she was. She seemed very confident and seemed like she wasn't going to let anyone bring her down. I hope she lived up to her words because she has every right to be proud of who she is.

Wright is not discussing how it "feels" to be black. He is discussing the effects of being black and livibg in a society that considers nonwhite people inferoior to whites.
I don't think you meant what you wrote in your blog to be offensive but, it was. Wright is not discussing black culture or the "negative" side of being black. He is in fact speaking about white southern culture, which at the time included Jim Crow laws to protect white culture. Wright is writing about what it's like to be black living in a white power structure during that time period.
Think about the comment you made about there being a positive and negative side to being black. Is there a positive and negative side to being white, or is there simply a positive and negative side to Being, period.
