Desiree's Baby

Kate Chopin's story, "Desiree's Baby," has its similarities and its differences from what we previously have read. It has its similarities in the sense that they mixed the french language and the english language like the stories "At the 'Cadian Ball" and "The Storm". Alos, this story was written some time after the abolition of slavery. However, it is different in the sense that the story takes place in Texas and not in the southeast and mid-atlantic states. The story was mainly about a woman coping with the fact that she is not white like she thought she was and how she really is "cursed with the brand of slavery".

For a majority of the book, the mother of the baby does deal grabble with the idea that she has African America heritage that she didn't know was there. I find it interesting that she accepts that it is in her blood and doesn't argue at all with her husband. I think this has a lot to do with the fact that at that time white men were placed higher than white women. These stories are all about social heirarchy I believe. In the end of the book, after the women has killed herself we find out that it wasn't infact her who has the African American heritage it was her husband-an interesting twist.
